Does your hair need a little TLC? Don’t worry, I have a solution that you can try at home! Today, I’m sharing 5 easy DIY hair mask that you can make with just a few ingredients. I’ve tried each of these masks myself and they worked really well to deep condition my dry hair. The best part is how cheap they are to make. On top of that, they use ingredients you might already have in your kitchen!
5 DIY Hair Masks
1. Olive oil + Honey
Recipe:
4 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp honey
Mix together, apply, and leave in for 20 min.
This one gave me super shiny and sleek hair. Forewarning: the mixture is very sticky and messy and it’s hard to spread. Heat it up just a little and you may have an easier time working with it. It smells really good though and the recipe was enough to cover my long, long hair.
2. Avocado + Coconut oil + Honey
Recipe:
1 tbsp avocado (mashed)
2 tbsp coconut oil
1 tsp honey
Mix together, apply, and leave on for 20 min.
Double the recipe for long hair. I did and I could’ve even used a little more than that. This mask started dripping on me just after 10 min. I had to keep a towel around my shoulders and neck to catch the drips. I also had to rinse it out a couple of times because of the avocado chunks. Really make sure to mash the avocado or even blend it to have less chunks. Since it’s thicker, it feels more like a nourishing deep conditioner. My hair came out soft, smooth, and shiny.
3. Honey + Apple Cider Vinegar + Egg
Recipe:
2 tbsp honey
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 eggs
Mix together, apply, and leave on for 20 min.
This mask was much thinner than the others. Luckily, it wasn’t chunky like the previous one, but it did start to drip almost immediately. It was super wet. This one took some extra rinsing because of the bits of egg clinging to my strands.
4. Banana + Honey + Yogurt
Recipe:
1 banana
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup plain yogurt
Blend together, apply, and leave on for 30 min.
This one was enough for all of my hair and then some! If you have shorter hair, you could probably cut this recipe in half. It felt like having oatmeal on my head and it smelled really good. It does start to drip down at the half-way point. This mask was pretty messy as well as sticky. I had to use a fine-tooth comb to get the chunks of banana out. It was all worth it though because in the end, I had nice, shiny hair.
5. Coconut oil
2 tbsp coconut oil
Spread through hair and leave on overnight or as a 20 min mask
This one is so simple and probably the least messy of the bunch. I’ve done this one a few times. At night, I just apply coconut oil all over my hair, clip it up and go to bed. Then, I wash it out in the morning. It doesn’t quite give me the results that the others do, but it still makes my hair look and feel nice. Coconut oil has so many benefits that keeping a jar of it on hand is good anyways.
I loved trying these masks and seeing how great they made my hair look. Best of all, they’re cheap to make and if you don’t already have the ingredients, they’re easy to find. The downside is that they can be pretty messy. If that is something that bothers you, then start with the coconut oil mask. It could be the only mask you need. If you’re adventurous, you can try the others too.

I always use coconut oil hair masks, sometimes alone, sometimes mix some herbs like basil leaves, Neem leaves, or hibiscus leaf powder. I must try these too, except the ACV one, cz I can’t bear the smell.

With the coconut oil, do I put it on dry hair or wet hair? I use coconut oil on my skin so now I want to try it on my dry hair.
Ashley says
You can do either. Many times I just apply it to dry hair and leave it overnight.

What would be the best one to use for someone with thinning hair. I would like my hair to get thicker and stronger and grow it long

I tried making a new mask by combining two of these, kinda – I didn’t have a banana or apple cider vinegar, so mixed two eggs, the 1/2 cup of yogurt, and 3tb honey together. BAD IDEA!!! It started dripping out of my processing cap down my face almost immediately and was very sticky. I could only stand it for about 10-15 mins. The worst part was, my hair was so dried out I didn’t even shampoo, just rinsed, and didn’t notice one bit of difference 🙁
Ashley says
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Hopefully your next experience with a hair mask will be better!

I tried the first two and really liked them, especially the avocado, honey and coconut oil (for the olive oil and honey – have really dense hair, so because you said it was hard to spread doubled the recipe and SLATHERED it on – and had the WORSE time getting it out!). What were your results for the one with the egg? Also, do you put these on dry hair or towel-dryed? I’ve been doing towel-dryed since that’s how all my store-bought masks are used. Thank you!!!
Ashley says
Most of them required extra washing and rinsing for me to fully get them out of my hair. The egg one was a bit of a challenge to get out because there were bits of egg clinging to my hair. Afterwards though, my hair looked shiny and felt smooth.
I applied them all to dry hair, but I think they might spread easier on towel-dried hair.

So you don’t have egg problems. You should rinse it out very well with lukewarm water.

I did the banana, honey and yogurt one today. I’m pretty happy of the result (shiny and smooth) although I think the mask was too messy and too complicated to take off. I really want to try the coconut oil, as I see it on almost every makeup blogs !
Cika says
What did you use to wash them out? And did you condition afterword?
Ashley says
I just use regular shampoo to wash them out. I usually have to wash a couple of times so that my hair doesn’t turn out looking greasy. You can condition your hair after if you feel that you need to. I don’t usually find it necessary to condition right after.
Cindy says
How many times a week can I do this?
Ashley says
I would suggest doing it once or twice a week, depending on how much deep conditioning your hair really needs.
