Doily Heart Envelope Banner

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to add a little handmade charm to your space, and this doily heart envelope banner does exactly that. This simple craft is cute and budget-friendly. You can use it to decorate for a Valentine’s party, spruce up a mantel, or just make it for fun. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to create your own doily heart envelope banner step by step, so you can add a personal, handmade touch to your Valentine’s Day decor.

Supplies

Optional

Note: These instructions include making your own heart cutouts to glue onto the envelope, but if you’d rather use stickers, go ahead. You can also cut out vinyl or paper hearts with a Cricut or other craft cutting machine.

Instructions

  1. Start with the yarn. Cut a piece of yarn for the length of the banner. Hold it up to the spot where you want to hang it and cut it a little longer than needed (better too much than not enough). Set it aside.
  2. Take a heart doily, turn it over (colored-side facing down), and have the point of the heart at the top.
  3. Fold the two sides inward, evenly. They should not overlap.
  4. Fold the bottom of the heart upwards, about halfway. This will overlap the side flaps.
  5. Fold the top down so that it overlaps the bottom, like an envelope. We aren’t gluing the envelope closed just yet, so leave it like this. Make as many envelopes as you want the banner to hold. Reference the length of the yarn if needed.
  6. Spread out the yarn and open envelopes on a long flat surface to see how you want to place them. Arrange the envelopes, alternating colors if applicable and space them out evenly.
  7. Attach the open envelopes to the yarn with E6000 glue under the flap. This will keep the envelope in place and not slide around. If you’d prefer it to slide so that you can adjust it while it’s hanging, skip the glue. This can cause some unwanted movement, but the envelopes should be able to mostly stay in place.
  8. Use your heart punch with cardstock paper to punch out small paper hearts.
  9. Close the envelope flap down over the yarn and secure with E6000 and a paper heart or a heart sticker.
  10. Once all dry, hang your envelope heart banner where you want it and trim any excess yarn from the ends.
