Every now and then I have to go through my beauty products and just purge. It gets overwhelming to have such a huge collection, especially because beauty products do expire at some point. Instead of impulsively throwing everything away though, I look at what I have and determine what I can do with it. Keep reading to find out what I do with my extra beauty products.
What I do with my extra beauty products
About a week ago I went through all of my cabinets, drawers, and countertops, rounding up the products I don’t use. Some things were barely used and others were brand new, but I knew I wouldn’t be getting any future use out of these things. I gathered 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner, body wash, lotions, and samples. The first idea that popped into my head was to use these items to make care bags for the homeless. My mom and I had done this once before a few months ago, so it was a perfect time to do it again.
Knowing we needed more things to add to the bags besides what I already had, my mom and I took a little trip to a local Dollar Tree for additional supplies. We found most of what we wanted there and only had to pick up a couple more things from Walmart (can you believe Dollar Tree didn’t have any empty travel-sized bottles?!).
Then, we put the bags together. In each bag we included:
- 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner
- body wash
- lotion
- deodorant
- toothbrush
- toothpaste
- flossers
- comb
- cotton swabs
- cotton balls
- tissues
- band-aids
- ziplock bags
To see how it all came together, watch the video below. Fair warning: the whole video is not about the bags for the homeless. There are some other random parts of my life in there as well. The bag discussion is in the second half of the video.

I’m glad to be making this a regular plan every few months. We’ve spread the word to family and friends to hopefully inspire others to do similar acts of kindness and in the process we’ve also discovered more local places in need of these types of things or even volunteers.
It’s easy to get caught up in life and take things for granted, especially when we’re accustomed to those things always being there. It feels good to give to others, even if it’s just a small package of personal care items. Any small gesture you make can go a long way for someone else.
