Many of Benefit’s products are adored by makeup lovers. I see them mentioned all over in YouTube videos and on blogs quite frequently. Benefit’s mascaras are among some of those popular products from the brand. I’ve been using two of them, Roller Lash and They’re Real, so I can compare them for you. Keep reading to find out what makes them different and which one I like better!
About these Benefit Mascaras
Roller Lash
A black satin mascara with a curved “Hook n’ Roll” brush that grabs lashes, separates them, lifts and curls.
Price: $24
They’re Real!
A jet black lengthening, volumizing mascara that also lifts, curls, and separates. It comes in brown and blue colors as well.
Price: $24
First Impressions
Based on their descriptions, I’d automatically be drawn to They’re Real by default because I typically choose mascaras that claim to offer length and volume. I also know that it’s been around longer and has a lot of buzz around it for being a good mascara.
I didn’t have a preference when it came to the brushes, although they do have clear differences. You can see that Roller Lash has a curved brush with long bristles on the top side and short bristles underneath. They’re Real has a straight brush with varied bristle lengths all over and a few spikes at the end to reach inner corner lashes.
How they apply & wear
Roller Lash seems to apply quicker to achieve the look I want. My lashes get a fanned out, lifted and volumized effect. They’re Real gives my lashes a wispy, lengthened effect. Neither look clumpy or spidery. Both last all day without smudging, flaking, or wearing away. Both also keep my lashes feeling flexible and soft to the touch, never stiff.
Both are shown with 2 coats and on top lashes only.
See if you can guess which one I like more before I tell you!
Which one do I like better?
Now, it’s time to reveal which one I prefer! While I like both and will easily repurchase both in the future, there’s one I like a little more than the other. It’s Roller Lash! Were you able to guess it right? I love how Roller Lash lifts my eyelashes and makes them look full while still looking natural. They’re Real gives my lashes a wispy look, but doesn’t make them as volumized or as lifted as Roller Lash does. If you look back at the comparison above, you’ll see that They’re Real gives my eyelashes a bit more length, but Roller Lash adds volume to the full length of each individual lash. They’re Real adds volume mostly to the base of the lash. I always choose volume over length. With full eye makeup on, Roller Lash makes my lashes stand out more, in my opinion. I would recommend trying both of these Benefit mascaras so you can see which one works better for you!

I like and use both too, but I prefer the They’re Real, even on you. I like that your lashes are not lumped together in areas like they do sometimes with Roller Lash. But yes I love both too!
